Jazz-Department Conservatorium van Amsterdam

The Conservatorium van Amsterdam (CvA) is the largest and most diverse conservatory in the Netherlands. This is the official page of the Jazz department.

Over 300 students are enrolled at the CvA jazz department. Jazz includes all kinds of musical styles - from bebop to Afro-Cuban music and from R&B to fusion. The jazz department offers a Bachelor’s Degree Program and a Master’s Degree Program.

The CvA has developed an outstanding format for Artists-in-Residence. For each department, at least one internationally acclaimed guest will give clinics, workshops, master classes and private lessons during the year. Musicians we have welcomed in previous years: a.o. Jason Moran, John Clayton, Brad Mehldau, Kurt Elling, Justin DiCioccio, Dick Oatts, Bob Stoloff, Kai Eckhardt, Gilad Hekselman, Snarky Puppy, David Linx, Carl Allen, Tony Malaby, Miguel Zenon, Mark Turner and John Riley.

The Cva Jazz Department maintains student exchange programmes with the Manhattan School of Music, New York; Temple University Philadelphia; State University of New York at Purchase and Loyola University New Orleans.
There are also many exchange possibilities with prominent European institutes. EUJAM is a joint master's degree program offered by the conservatories of Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Paris and Trondheim. EUJAM students will get the possibility to investigate European jazz in its broad artistic, cultural and entrepreneurial scope and to develop a strong international professional network.

With outstanding teachers at its disposal, situated in one of Europe's most vibrant musical centres, the Conservatorium van Amsterdam takes full advantage of the city’s diverse musical climate. CvA students play concerts all around town, from the prestigious BIMHUIS, the North Sea Jazz Club, and the NRC café, to the van Gogh Museum, Vondelpark Openluchttheater, CBK-oost, Uitmarkt and Artis, the city’s zoo. Students also play at numerous jazz festivals, including North Sea Jazz Festival, Meerjazz and Jazzfest Amsterdam.

The Conservatorium van Amsterdam is part of the Amsterdam School of the Arts. The special combination of departments at the Amsterdam School of Arts allows students to become acquainted with other arts-related degree programmes such as theatre, dance, film, the visual arts and architecture.
